Say hello to Patience and Fortitude...

19 May 2012

With Nicholas' help, two Japanese Maples I got for my birthday have a new home in front of the house.

They're named for the two famous lions that guard the entrance of the NY Public Library and are in approximately the same position as their counterparts on 5th Avenue and 42nd Street. Patience guards the south side of the garden whilst Fortitude is closer to the door on the north side.

Next up is putting down the mulch and building a small retaining wall round the front of the garden.

Eviction day!

I found a little surprise this afternoon when clearing out the front flowerbed for the two new Japanese Maples that will be planted soon.

It looked like Storeria dekayi or a very common species of brown snake. Even though they're not poisonous, he doesn't need to be hanging around when tilling starts happening out there. After we're done planting, he's welcome to all of the bugs and slugs he can eat! :)
